Monthly Update: February 2022
Oh my, when did I become so busy?
It feels like in the last month I’ve gone from a fairly straightforward schedule to being pulled in multiple directions at once, and all by my own doing. Shortly after Part VI came out I received a very tantalizing offer from a studio looking for some Unreal help with an upcoming series premiering on a major streaming network. The gig is only for a few weeks, and it sounded like such an interesting project that, despite my usual avoidance of freelance work, I couldn’t refuse. This is, however, on top of a second freelance project for the same folks that experienced a couple of delays due to the holidays. So, now I’m working on a feature film, two side project, and Forlorn, all at once. So, as you can imagine, I’ve spread myself a bit thin. But, as I mentioned, I have nobody to blame but myself for this.
Now, you might be thinking “Alex, if you have all this stuff going on, are you going to have to shelve the last episode of Forlorn for a bit?” And the answer to that, dear citizen, is of course not! Work on Part VII will continue! However, it will just be a little more sporadic than it once was, and my general timeline will be extended a bit. Rather than animation 3 or 4 shots a week now, it will most likely go down to around 1 or 2 per week for the next 6 weeks or so. But these next shots I have to do are pretty quick and easy, so I may be able to output faster than that, we shall see. Based on the way things are going, there’s still the distinct possibility of the finale being wrapped by June, but I don’t want to make any promises.
On the not Forlorn front, this month brought with the first look many people were able to get of Black Adam, the movie I’ve been working on for close to two and a half years now. Almost every shot from the film featured in the superb owl commercial is something I had a hand in previsualizing using Unreal Engine. One of my team’s incredible shot creators would animate the camera and characters, while my department’s job is to design the lighting and FX that would be used in the sequence, often times working directly with the cinematographer himself, and that information gets carried on to the final product. If you haven’t seen that little teaser, you can check it out here:
In the meantime, I have a lot of other exciting developments in the pipeline that hopefully I’ll get a chance to talk about soon. Stay tuned for that! But otherwise, there hasn’t been too much happening this month. Every waking second of my life is now working on some project, and that’s just how it’s gonna be for a while. I very much doubt the March update will be much different than this, but you never know! Either way, until then!
